To Stroller or Not to Stroller…

Read Part One and Part Two first!

Bringing one with us presented some challenges. The only stroller we own is our big old Graco one that we’ve had since she was an infant. Works great, she can still fit in it, but we had no desire to lug it to the airport, figure out how to check it and potentially pay to check it and then have to lug it around once we were there.

An umbrella stroller was not really an option for us. Our girl is big for her age. She was only just turning 5, but looks more like a 7 year old. She’s about 46.5″ tall and 49.5 lbs. That is pushing the limit on most cheap umbrella strollers.

We could’ve potentially purchased a more heavy duty umbrella stroller and taken it with us. But then I kept thinking I’ll have this stroller I won’t use once we get back home and, frankly, we do not have the space for more stuff. (After the fact we were given an interesting suggestion to solve that problem – donate it to charity! DUH!! Wish I would’ve thought of that sooner!! But I digress…)

Okay – so bringing one with was not attractive to us and a no go. On to the rental options…

To Stroller or Not to Stroller…

Read Part One First!

Well those 45 days quickly dwindled and dwindled and I still struggled with the stroller issue.

See, like most parents of preschoolers – I’d say, in particular, like parents of an only child of preschool age – I hadn’t consistently used a stroller in about 2 years, and not at all in the last year. I kept thinking, “Oh, she’s a big girl. We walk everywhere now. Would we really need it?”

Plus, I hate to say it, but we thought we were too “cool” to have to worry about a stroller. I mean, a stroller, for my almost 5 year old, seriously!!?? Poo-shaw! I sort of ranked that up there with being potty trained, losing the binky and not carrying a diaper bag any more. We are parents of a big girl now! I was feeling stubborn and proud and I was stamping my feet – “NO! I don’t wanna push a stroller!!”

But, as much as my gut (and my pride) was saying NO, all the research was saying YES! YES! YES! Unequivocally – YES!!

Now we were probably about two weeks away from departure. Okay, I’m finally convinced that, yes, indeed we would need a stroller – at least part of the time. The next question was to rent or to bring one with us.

To Stroller or Not to Stroller…

Okay, so, you’re headed to WDW to celebrate your child’s birthday – let’s say it’s the big number “5.” YAY! How marvelous! However, that means traveling and visiting parks with an ever mercurial, potentially cranky preschooler….not so yay.

Don’t get me wrong. Visiting WDW with your child(ren) is a truly magical, wonderful experience, but, we all know that we have to be practical. It is never easy traveling and/or visiting anywhere with a 3-5 year old. And, trust me, the potential for a cranky preschooler after walking 5+ miles a day through the parks and resorts at WDW is more than just potential – IT IS CERTAINTY!

This was the reality I faced when we recently visited WDW. Now let me preface all this by saying that we did it all wrong when we “planned” this vacation. It had been quite a while since either myself or my husband had been to WDW. Let’s just say, in my case, Epcot didn’t even exist yet (hanging my head in shame).

So, we had no reference at all for traveling to WDW with kids. I read the books, I looked at the forums and the blogs, but really, you have to plan 6 months to a year in advance!? Poo-shaw I said! HA HA HA!! The joke was on me!

Now, originally we were going to plan our visit 6 months out. Then life and family illnesses and uncertainty creeped in and before I knew it we were about a month and a half away from our girl’s big 5 birthday.

Well the planning and the reservation making started happening in a fast and furious fashion – to say the least. I had an ambitious 6 day/5 night plan. I made ADRs everywhere – at our resort, in Downtown Disney, at other resorts, at Epcot – it all made sense…on paper.

I figured we were staying on property, had transportation at our beck and call, how hard could it be to get around WDW, hop from park to park and go from resort to resort? Oh, how naïve I was!

Make sure to read Part Two and Part Three of WDW with Preschoolers!
